Areas south of Interstate 10 may see heat index values nearing 110 degrees. These values are well above normal for October and are higher than we have seen since late August.Abundant low level moisture will combine with afternoon high temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s to drive heat index values across southeast texas to between 103 and 108 degrees. If you plan to be outside today, drink plenty of water and avoid prolonged strenuous activity. Your body can lose up to one gallon of water an hour through perspiration. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM Saturday

Very warm afternoon temperatures in combination with elevated relative humidity levels will persist this afternoon. Expect heat index values of 103 to 108 degrees between noon and 5 PM then slowly lowering outside of the rain-cooled areas by 8 PM. Drier air will spread into the area tonight and Sunday along with slightly cooler afternoon temperatures which should end this period of high heat index readings.

The heat index readings late this morning will exceed the 102 mark and peak at 107 to 111.The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston has issued a heat advisory... which is in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening.

Very warm temperatures on tap again today and combined with abundant Gulf moisture the heat index readings late this morning will exceed the 102 mark and peak at 107 to 111 over the advisory area during the early to mid afternoon hours. Thunderstorms are expected to erupt in this hot and humid atmosphere across the northern portions of the area and move south bringing cooling from cloud cover and much cooler thunderstorm outflows. Some areas south of the Interstate 10 corridor may not see much relief from these high heat index readings until after 6 PM.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 7 pm this evening.

Peak heat indices of 105 to 109 degrees are likely across the advisory area this afternoon. Little relief is expected during the overnight hours with temperatures expected to remain above 80 degrees for all but possibly one or two hours early in the morning. The heat advisory will likely need to be extended through Wednesday.

The initial heat advisory is issued when a maximum heat index of 108 degrees or higher is forecast to occur on two consecutive days. The heat advisory is continued until heat indices are forecast to remain below 105 degrees for an entire day.

Avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. Drink plenty of water hours before going outside your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stroke. Wear lightweight, light- colored, loose-fitting clothing. Wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun, and use a sunscreen to reduce possible sunburn.
